DAILY RECIPES BY CALENDAR
As an ongoing feature here, I will add to this each day the recipes out of several books I have that are dated or from calendar books. I have missed a few days this year so far so I will post them as I get them typed.
I have three right off the bat that are calendars, one from 1875, one from the early 1900’s and one from the 1930’s to 40’s.
A small leather covered calendar book from Burlington Vermont dated 1875. It has all kinds of lovely handwritten dessert recipes; the front of the book has an overview of each month and a predictive weather chart, the difference of tie between Boston and New York, the value of gold and silver at the time and other interesting things like rates of postage.
The first couple of days have notes on fabrics and an address, then some pasted in clippings from newspapers. Oatmeal Gruel, Flour, Tomato stew, Plain Fruit cake, Stale cake pudding, and Cookies without eggs, several more pages of clippings.
January 1st 1875
PLAIN FRUIT CAKE
One cup sweet milk, one of brown sugar, half of New Orleans Molasses, half of butter, three of flour, half pound raisins, one cup currants, half teaspoon salt, half teaspoon cloves, half tablespoon cinnamon, fourth of nutmeg, two eggs, well beaten, two heaping teaspoons baking powder. This makes two ordinary-sized loaves.
January 2nd 1875
STALE CAKE PUDDING
Two cups cake crumbs, four cups milk, two eggs, three tablespoons sugar, mix; put a layer of the mixture in the bottom of the dish, then a layer of raisins, and so on until the dish is nearly full; bake slowly; serve with cream or sweet sauce.

COOKIES WITHOUT EGGS
Two cups sugar, one of milk, one of butter, half teaspoon nutmeg, half teaspoon soda, flour to make thick enough to roll.
The next book is a red date book that is dated 1912 from Avondale Pennsylvania. There are several different hands involved in the recipes and they are dated up to 1944. It starts out with a list of recipes on January 1st and then on the second we get a couple cake recipes from Mother.
