July 7th, Lemon & Pineapple Sherbit 1940’s

A couple of nice “Ices” for these hot July days from the 1940’s, Oxford Michigan.

Lemon Sherbit

Mildred Sternberg 1940 – Oxford Mich.  Died 1972

1 c. sugar

2 egg yolks (beaten)

2 c. milk

2 egg whites (beaten)

Grated rind of 1 lemon

Pinch salt

1 c. cream (before beaten)

Stir once during freezing – freeze fast first ½ hour.

Pineapple Sherbit   – Amy

1 c crushed pine (pineapple)

1 c sugar

2 c milk {1 c ½ & 1/2; 1 c milk}

2 tsp lemon juice

{1 tsp. vanilla, pinch salt, 1 egg white, slightly beaten}

Combine ingredients and freeze at highest temp.  Stir from sides of pan about twice & stir after completely set.  Turn icebox to normal freezing.

I got these from Carmichael California, but the location places in the notebook, several say Oxford Michigan (Mildred Sternberg, 1940 Died 1972, recipe is for a Lemon Sherbet), from a set of handwritten books with the dates starting in 1908 and going through the 1960’s.

This nice set of loose papers and two handwritten books has some very interesting family history in the older spiral notebook; she has listed recipes and the names of the contributing person as well as the date and their age when they passed away.   I will add these statistics as I go through the books.

Here is the list of family names, dates and recipes associated with each person.
