Colonial Cherries

Take 4 qts. nice cherries and seed, put in a stone crock, cover with good cider vinegar, not too strong, let stand 4 days.  Stir with wooden spoon every day, after 4 days pour vinegar off and add as much sugar as cherries, let stand 4 days more.  Stir with wooden spoon every day, put in jars and fill with juice, do not let juice touch lid, do not screw on tight.

I believe it means to fill up a cup measure with the 2/3 cup of sour cream and then the rest with the sour milk, so 1/3 cup of the milk.
