Hobo Bread 1908 through 1960’s (Also known as Weary Willy Cake)
Oxford Michigan
1908 – 1960s
Hobo Bread
1 c chopped dates
1 c raisins
2 c water
2 tsp soda
Add soda to dates, water & raisins
Boil above mixture until it becomes foamy. Remove from stove, let cool.
Part 2; –
1 ½ c white sug
1 ½ tsp vanilla
1 c nut meats
3 cups flour – (regular)
2 eggs slightly beaten
¼ tsp salt
Beat eggs, sugar & vanilla – add this too the 1st mixture alternately with four. Then add the nut meats. Mix well
Flour & grease 3 – 1 # Coffee cans.
Divide mix evenly in the 3 cans.
Bake 350degrees 45 min. Test before removing; tester must come out clean. Leave in cans – 3 min before removing. Remove, let cool. When cool wrap in wax paper. Return to can if desired. Do not refreeze if you had frozen them. Dark but delicious flavor.

They could very well be the same thing, just under different names.
I got these from Carmichael California, but the location places in the notebook, several say Oxford Michigan (Mildred Sternberg, 1940 Died 1972, recipe is for a Lemon Sherbet), from a set of handwritten books with the dates starting in 1908 and going through the 1960’s.
This nice set of loose papers and two handwritten books has some very interesting family history in the older spiral notebook; she has listed recipes and the names of the contributing person as well as the date and their age when they passed away. I will add these statistics as I go through the books.
