July 8th, Nameless Cake from 1908 through the 60’s
Nameless Cake (Betty Ellen)
¾ c. Short. ¾ tsp. nutmeg
1 ½ c gran sug 1 tsp. cinnamon
3 eggs 2 tbsp. cocoa
1 ¾ c. flour ¾ c. sour milk
½ tsp. B.P. 1 tsp vanilla
½ tsp soda 1 tsp lemon
½ tsp salt ½ c chopped nuts
Cream short. & add sug. Gradually – add 3 eggs – 1 at a time. Mix well. Sift flour once – measure & sift with dry ingredients. Add this to creamed mixture alternately with milk – Blend in flavoring & last – add nut meats.
Bake in 2 – 8” layers pans 2” deep – 30 min – 350 degrees.
Frosting
6 T. butter or substitute 1 ½ T. cocoa
1 egg yolk – 1 tsp. cinn 1 ½ tsp. hot coffee
3 c. powdered sugar –
Sug = sugar; gran = granulated; cinn = cinnamon; short. = shortening
I got these from Carmichael California, but the location places in the notebook, several say Oxford Michigan (Mildred Sternberg, 1940 Died 1972, recipe is for a Lemon Sherbet), from a set of handwritten books with the dates starting in 1908 and going through the 1960’s.
This nice set of loose papers and two handwritten books has some very interesting family history in the older spiral notebook; she has listed recipes and the names of the contributing person as well as the date and their age when they passed away. I will add these statistics as I go through the books.
