Washington’s Birthday February 22nd in the 1950’s Cherry Pie and decoration ideas

These are from a nice set of books I got from Columbus, Wisconsin, belonging to a Mrs. Corinne Christians; they are mostly dated in the 1950’s, except one book is dated in the 1920’s.  She was likely a secretary as a lot of the recipes are written in shorthand; I will need to find someone who knows how to read that, I certainly do not!

All through these cookbooks are the holiday recipes listed here, the ones from the 1950’s.  Just a few of the names noted in these are;

Martha Crane

Helen (I think she is also a Crane)

Luella Mortenson

Vera Ogenbrink

Christine Halden

Jane or Joan Hood

Also a Martha B.

More names

Mrs. Mortenson

Betty Moore (address is 511 Canal st N.Y. 13)

Mary Bailey

Helen Joyce

There is also a Address sticker for

Mrs. Donald Christians 479 Fuller St./ Columbus, Wisc.

Mrs. Rennebokins

Edith Hansen

There are a few interesting holiday notations in this book from the 1950’s all about decorations and recipes that can be made for each holiday.   For February she has Valentine’s Day, Washington’s and Lincoln’s B-days.

Small Branches to represent tree – red gum drops put on wire on branch small silver or red hatchets at base of tree blue candles, etc.

B.P., ¼ t. salt, 2/3 c milk) (1 can cherries & juice, ½ c sugar) Melt butter in 8” sq. pan – sift dry ingreds into bowl.  Add milk &, mix – pour over butter in pan.  Mix cherries & sugar & spoon over batter.  Bake at 350degrees – 35 – 45 min.  Serve warm or cold with cream.

Flr. = flour; B.P. = baking powder; sq. = square pan; conf. = confectioners sugar; veg. short. = vegetable shortening; b. cream = butter cream.

Confectioners sugar is different from powdered sugar, it does not have cornstarch mixed into it like powdered sugar has.
