July 28th 1932
It is a very nice, cool morning. To prove this Mamma said that it was 42degrees above when she arose in the morning. Besides, it was so cold in the house the she had to have a sweater on. Now we know it was cold!
I have just baked a Date Cake and when Ma and Millie come back with the mail we are going to fry doughnuts. This afternoon we are going to Ladies Aid at A. Berg’s.

Date Cake
1 egg ½ t. b. pwdr.
1 cup sugar 2/3 cup dates cut fine
2 tbsp. melted butter ½ cup nuts chopped
1 tsp. vanilla 2 cups flour (or a little more)
1 cup boiling water
1 tsp. soda
First pour the cup of boiling water over the dates and nuts. Beat egg and add sugar and butter. Then mix all ingredients together and beat well. Bake 40 minutes in slow oven (or until done) This cake is moist and will keep a long time – if you don’t eat it up because it is so good.
Donated by Mrs. Cam Carlson.

Take a look at the post from August 24th last year for another Date Cake recipe, this one is from 1875.
