DAILY RECIPES BY CALENDAR

As an ongoing feature here, I will add to this each day the recipes out of several books I have that are dated or from calendar books

A small leather covered calendar book from Burlington Vermont dated 1875.  It has all kinds of lovely handwritten dessert recipes; the front of the book has an overview of each month and a predictive weather chart, the difference of tie between Boston and New York, the value of gold and silver at the time and other interesting things like rates of postage.

The list of names for the people who contributed recipes for these books are listed here;

San Francisco CA 1910’s through the 1950’s.

2 tsp. tapioca

½ cup sugar

This is written on the back of a receipt for a hospital bill; for a Glendoris Cullen, by Dyke Cullen on 7-30-50 in Bethesda Maryland.  There is a newspaper cutout of a wedding for them on November 22nd, but no date for the year.  A great deal of these recipes uses a vegetable substitute such as spry or oleo as the fat for them; this was a common ingredient during the war years as things like butter, lard and more common fats were being rationed because of WWII.    That makes these recipes likely to be dated in the late 30’s to the late 40’s; dates found in the book are from 1910’s through the 1950’s.

There are a few locations mentioned in the newspaper articles that I can find, mostly on the East coast; Washington D.C. Maryland, Dubuque Iowa and Illinois.  So even though I got this book from San Francisco California, I think it was mostly from the other side of the country.  Although, they were a military couple, as it shows in the wedding article, and could have been a well-traveled cookbook.
