Creeping Hall, Lingwood, Norwich England 1864, Paradise Pudding

Ellen Packard Nov 3rd 1864, Creeping Hall

Miss Packard was waxing lyrical about a pudding, I enjoy these very interesting commentaries from the ladies of this time.  The creativity is amazing and this is a very nice poem.

Paradise Pudding

If you’d have a good pudding

Pray mind what you’re taught

Take 2 pennyworth of eggs, when

They’er 12 for a groat

Take of the same fruit which Eve

Did once cozen

When pared it well chopped at

Least half a dozen

Six ounces of bread (let your

maid eat the crust)

the crumb must be grated as

fine as fine dust

Six ounces of currants, I pray

Wash them clean

Lest they grate in your teeth

You know what I mean.

Six ounces of sugar won’t make

It too sweet

Some salt & some nutmeg to

Make it complete

To which you may add if

Your willing & handy

Some good lemon peel & a large

Glass of Brandy

Three hours let it boil without

Hurry or flutter

And then serve it up with some

Good melted butter.

Adam tasted the pudding t’was

Wondrous nice

And Eve cut her husband an

-other large slice.
