1875 and 1915 Tip Top Cakes for February 27th
Tip Top Cake
I have found these two recipes in the last two books I got. Interesting how sometimes things group together.
The only info I have is from these two recipes; searching the internet all I get is a couple of bakeries named Tip top Cakes. I will keep looking but not a lot of explanation on them so far.
There are a couple references to them

1 cup milk.
4 eggs.
1 lb. chopped raisins. (Citron may be used instead of raisins.)
a nutmeg, grated.
5 scant cups of flour.

Mix together same as ordinary cake and bake in a loaf. This Aunt Sarah considered one of her finest cake recipes. She had used it for years in her family. The friend who gave this recipe to Aunt Sarah said: ‘;A couple of tablespoonfuls of brandy will improve the cake.”
This is a wonderful source for food history;

They look like a nice simple type of cake and as the newspaper recipe says; “this cake is no trouble at all to make”.

A small book from Lebanon PA that is dated 1875.

A ledger cook book from Wabash Indiana and dates found are from 1910’s to the 1920’s
