The Olson Family Cookbook 1920’s – 40’s Oct 10th 1930, Pumpkin Pie & Burnt Sugar Cake

Sauris North Dakota 1920’s – 40’s

October 10, 1930

This morning Millie went to help Alma prepare for the Ladies Aid Sale which will take place at A. Berg’s tomorrow.  Mother, Chris & Elisa are at home.  We are going to bake pumpkin pie, burnt-sugar cake, etc.

The clothes did not get dry that were washed day before yesterday and it doesn’t look very promising today either, though it has not rained much.

A little episode of this A.M. Mamma says,

(at this point it is all in another language; I believe Norwegian.  I am not going to try to translate it or write the words.)

Three Cheers for Mrs. Carlson!!

Well Spoken! I word from the wise should be sufficient!

Pumpkin pie

1 ½ cup cooked and strained pumpkin

½ tsp. ginger or nutmeg

2 eggs                                                       1 tsp. cinnamon

1 ½ cup milk                                            1 tsp. orange juice

2/3 cup br. Sugar

1 tsp. salt

Mix pumpkin, sugar, salt and spices, add slightly beaten eggs, and milk.  Beat well; then add the orange juice.  Fill the crust and bake.  When a silver knife inverted in the pie will come from it clean, the pie is done.  Put sweet, whipped cream on top.

Burnt Sugar Cake (Caramel Cake)

For this cake, please see September 19th for the recipes.
