Jackson Cakes    

1 lb. sugar

1 cup butter

1 cup thick milk

5 cups flour

3 eggs

1 teaspoon soda

Let it stand overnight, then roll it. 

These could very well be cookies, in this time period the soft chewy ones were often called cakes or drop cakes.  The hard, crispy cookies are often called biscuits.
