Johnny Cake

2/3 teaspoon of soda, 3 tablespoons of sugar, 1 teaspoon of cream tartar, one egg, one cup sweet milk, six tablespoons Indian meal, three tablespoons of flour, and a little salt.  This makes a thin batter.

And Vanities

Beat 2 eggs, stir in a pinch of salt and a half teaspoon of rosewater, add sifted flour until just thick enough to roll out.  Cut with cake cutter and fry quickly in hot lard.  Sift powdered sugar on them while hot, and when cool put a teaspoon of jelly in the center of each and (?serve) for tea or dessert.
